About this place

The Cathedral of Santa Cruz, known as the New Cathedral, rises by the sea on the site of the old cathedral, which was damaged in the Anglo-Dutch sack of 1596. Building began in 1722 and was not finished until 1838, which is why its baroque façade blends with neoclassical features in the rest of the building.

Its dome, covered in yellow tiles, is the first thing you see when approaching Cádiz by sea or by road. The composer Manuel de Falla, born in the city, is buried in the crypt.

It stands in the old town, a few steps from Plaza de San Juan de Dios and the Pópulo quarter. Before you go, check the official website for opening times and visiting conditions, including the tower climb.
