About this place

The Theatrum Balbi is the theatre of ancient Gades, commissioned in the 1st century BC by the Cádiz-born Lucius Cornelius Balbus. It lay buried under the houses of the Pópulo quarter until its discovery in 1980, and is today one of the great Roman theatres known in the peninsula.

You visit it from an interpretation centre on Calle Mesón, which explains its galleries, the seating area and the surrounding quarter. It pairs perfectly with the Arco del Pópulo and the cathedral.

Opening times and entry conditions change: confirm them with the city council or the official tourism website before you go.
