About this place

On Plaza de España stands the monument to the Cortes and the 1812 Constitution, inaugurated for the centenary. It is the work of the architect Modesto López Otero and the sculptor Aniceto Marinas.

The Constitution was proclaimed in Cádiz on 19 March 1812, Saint Joseph’s day, which is why it is nicknamed “La Pepa”. It was Spain’s first constitution and a landmark of liberalism in Europe and the Americas.

The monument is next to the port and the town hall, so it is easy to see on your way to other places in the centre.
